Objectif(s): This study will be composed of an assessment field trip as well as a larger field study used to teach the regional geology to geologists who work for companies that currently hold petroleum leases in the Delta area.

Description du projet: This study will be composed of an assessment field trip as well as a larger field study used to teach the regional geology to geologists who work for companies that currently hold petroleum leases in the Delta area. The trip in July will serve as a scoping trip to prepare for the field trip by assessing specific sites for suitability as field trip stops. Every site will be evaluated for its scientific importance, accessibility, environmental sensitivity, and helicopter and personal safety hazards. Notes about the geology will be taken. At a few sites, small hand-samples of the rock may be taken for lab analysis. Pictures will be taken. Notes will be taken about: where to land, possible safety hazards to participants, and possible environmental sensitivities. Except for the Dempster Highway sites, the reconnaissance trip will consist of daily helicopter-supported excursions based from Inuvik. In September, the researcher expects to use a larger helicopter such as a Bell 212 for the daily excursions with the group, also out of Inuvik. A detailed field guide will be prepared for the participants, and will be available to all community stakeholders. After the trip, this document will be published, probably as a GSC Open File. All new GSC publications are available for free download from the GSC’s publications website: http://geopub.nrcan.gc.ca/index_e.php. There will be an opportunity for a local young person to participate and discover earth science. Fieldwork will be conducted from July 14 to September 30, 2008, at a total of approximately forty specific sites across the northern Richardson Mountains as far west as the Barn Mountains, including one site in the Caribou Hills, one on Caribou Creek, and several localities along the Dempster Highway. Exact locations can be obtained from the researcher.
