Objective(s): To test a stratified sample approach for obtaining harvest data; to design and implement a harvesting survey program which will provide a cost-benefit measuring stick and describe the size and nature of the native economy; to investigate and analyze the Inuit economic system in terms of structure, decision-making, labour process, and flexibility; and to use data collected to redefine the term "subsistence" within economic anthropology.
Project Description: Dr. Wenzel will be interviewing some hunters to collect harvest data and to learn about the costs of hunting. He also has some academic questions that he is investigating. These include: is there a better definition for the words "subsistence economy"; can you collect accurate harvest data if you only interview some hunters instead of all hunters; and, what are all the preparations and decisions hunters make to go hunting.
