Objective(s): To measure water depth and characteristics of inner Expedition Fiord by using an echo-sounder and by collecting water samples for laboratory analyses and measuring temperature; to investigate how sediments are deposited in the fiord from Thompson Glacier by obtaining sediment cores; and to determine how sediment deposits have changed in the last 100 years.

Project Description: Dr. Gilbert is looking at how the ocean floor is changed by sediments deposited from the Thompson Glacier. To do this study, he and a graduate student are mapping the depth of the fiord, collecting water samples for later analysis in the lab, and collecting cores of soil from the ocean floor.
