Objective(s): Objectives for this study include 1) to map health service pathways as described by health providers/allied providers for women in any stage of Type 2 diabetes or Gestational diabetes, 2) to understand the strengths and challenges associated with accessing/following/understanding diabetes care pathways for women living with diabetes from their perspectives, and 3) to understand the impacts of the physical environment and food landscape on influencing diabetes-related health behaviours for women living with diabetes.
Project Description: This licence has been issued for the scientific research application No. 6021. Objectives for this study include 1) to map health service pathways as described by health providers/allied providers for women in any stage of Type 2 diabetes (i.e. pre-diabetes, diagnosis, management, reversal) or Gestational diabetes (current or previously in the past 2 years) , 2) to understand the strengths and challenges associated with accessing/following/understanding diabetes care pathways for women living with diabetes from their perspectives, and 3) to understand the impacts of the physical environment and food landscape on influencing diabetes-related health behaviours for women living with diabetes. A Community Based Participatory Action Research Methodology will be employed, which will result in community leaders and representatives being involved throughout the research process to ensure respectful data collection and ensure that the community is able to determine the application of any findings. Members of the community will be hired and trained to conduct interviews and will also have opportunities to present findings to the community. This creates capacity for both leadership and research potential within the community, and allows the community to be directly involved in the research process. Semi-structured interviews will be used and are respective to the two participant groups (Women (<18) Lived experience with diabetes (i.e. current Type 2 diabetes diagnosis, pre-diabetes, current Gestational diabetes, Gestational/Type 2 diabetes in the past 2 years) and Healthcare providers/Community Health reps/Community Nurses/allied health providers) Results will be shared in ways that are meaningful and most relevant to the community. While the final dissemination will depend on the community's needs, it is expected that research will be presented through public meetings in the communities, visual displays such as infographics and posters, and a final research report. Preliminary findings will be shared with the local organizations in Paulatuk before the publication of the final results. A final copy of the thesis write up will also be available to the members of the community. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from: January 1 - December 31, 2025
