Objectif(s): To develop an economic model to estimate the costs and benefits of the residency program. The model will incorporate the duration of employment for newly hired RNs before and during the residency.

Description du projet: This licence has been issued for the scientific research application No. 5692. The purpose of this research project is to develop an economic model to estimate the costs and benefits of the nurse residency program. The model will incorporate the duration of employment for newly hired registered nurses, before and during their residency. The research team will obtain anonymous data from participating hospitals, spanning a time frame of one year before the start of the residency program, continuing until one year after. For each new RN employee, the research team will request the following data from the hospitals to be sent to the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN): 1) data on the date of hire; 2) whether or not the RN participated in the residency program in the country of education (Canada or abroad); 3) the duration of employment (up to one year). Members of the research team will not request any personal identifying information. The research team will use an economic model to estimate the effect of the residency program on the cost of nursing services. The items that will be included in this model are: 1) whether or not the newly hired nurse has taken a residency program; 2) the country of education; 3) the length of employment; 4) the cost of hiring the nurse; 5) the cost of employment of newly hired nurses; 6) and the cost of a temporary replacement nurse including time to rehire. The research team will prepare a report for CASN which will be used in its own communications. The team will also prepare an article for publication in a nursing journal. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from: October 01 - December 31, 2023
