Objective(s): To continue to study the physical limnology of Christie Bay in the East Arm of Great Slave Lake, NWT, Canada to develop a new scientific understanding of this unique area and to support studies of the sustainability of fish populations.
Project Description: This licence has been issued for the scientific research application No.5173. The overall objective of the proposed study is to continue to study the physical limnology of Christie Bay in the East Arm of Great Slave Lake, NWT, Canada to develop a new scientific understanding of this unique area and to support studies of the sustainability of fish populations. All lake measurements will be made from the deck of the recreational vehicle (R/V), Nahidik, by lowering instruments into the water using the ship's winch and cabling devices. The team will collect conductivity, temperature and depth (CTD) data from the lake surface to the lake bottom using a CTD instrument lowered from the deck of the ship along a transect of sites in Christie Bay. A full-depth, year-round mooring with 11 recording thermometers will be re-deployed at the deepest measured spot on Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) chart 6341 (62.5495’N and 111.0791W). The team will then collect bottom samples using an Eckmann grab to study lake benthic communities. Program details and results will be updated on the Arctic Research Foundation’s (ARF) website (www.ArcticFocus.org). Through the partnership with Northern Youth Leadership, students from participating local communities will be directly involved with program and will help develop continued research through out duration of program. ARF will coordinate community tours with partnering the Government of the NWT and Federal agencies to update research development with communities. The main goal is to continue to listen to the voices of the community to co-design and build meaningful research that will benefit the communities and partners involved. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from September 05, 2022 to September 09, 2022
