Project Description: This licence has been issued for the scientific research application No.5000. This year's field project has the objective to obtain accurate temperature measurement of the water in the mine at various depths. The measurements will be used to refine the analytical and numerical models for geothermal energy potential estimate of the mine. The more accurate measurements are taken, the better refined and accurate the potential estimate of the mine's geothermal energy will be. The desired outcome is to have temperature measurements in mine shafts and surrounding boreholes and groundwater monitoring wells, and use these as input constraints in the energy balance models. With the guidance and expertise of Newmont (the current owners of the Con Mine site), the research team will select appropriate mine shafts and wells for temperature monitoring. A temperature probe will be lowered into the mine shaft/well on a cable and temperature readings will be taken systematically at depth. Once measurements are finished and the temperature/depth data are logged, the probes will be retrieved. Data will then be used in computer models of the geothermal heat energy of the mine. Annual presentations will be made at the Northwest Territories Geological Survey (NTGS) geoscience conference. A plain-language summary will be created annually and posted on the NTGS website. The results of the overall study will be reported in an NTGS Open Report or similar publication. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from July 15, 2021 to August 31, 2021.
