Objective(s): To characterize the reservoir for a potential geothermal resources in Fort Liard by studying the same rock formation where it is accessible at surface.

Project Description: This licence has been issued for the scientific research application No.4969. The aim of the proposed fieldwork is to characterize the reservoir for potential geothermal resources in Fort Liard by studying the same rock formation where it is accessible at surface. By looking at how the Nahanni Formation changes both horizontally and vertically in a surface outcrop the research team can infer how hot groundwater moves through the rock at depth. The team will use a helicopter flight daily from Fort Simpson to selected site. Measurement and description will be taken of the outcrop at each site, rock samples taken approximately every 2 metres vertically (may vary due to visible changes in character of the rock). These samples are intended primarily for porosity & permeability testing. Other possible tests include mineralogy (XRD and/or lithogeochemistry), thin sections. Instruments to be used in the field include: measuring tape, J staffs, compasses, rock hammers. The research team plan to solicit feedback from relevant parties on the proposed research project. The team will address concerns and reply to any questions posed. When based in Fort Simpson, the team plan to visit community officials and government offices when schedules permit. Results and conclusions of the project will be distilled to a plain-language summary with the full report available at nwtgeoscience.ca The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from May 12, 2021 to July 08, 2021.
