Objective(s): The objective of this project is to increase collection of climate change indicators, while also training Dehcho Guardians to collect the same data independently in the future. This information in addition to the collection of traditional knowledge will show changes to the environment and the data can be used to protect it.
Project Description: This licence has been issued for the scientific research application No.4812. The objective of this project is to increase collection of climate change indicators, while also training Dehcho Guardians to collect the same data independently in the future. This information in addition to the collection of traditional knowledge will show changes to the environment and the data can be used to protect it. Brand thermistor strings will be located according to the location of maximum depth, as determined by traditional knowledge; the Aboriginal Aquatic Resources and Oceans Management (AAROM) Coordinator will be assisting local Dehcho Guardians to do this. Thermistors will be deployed at one- meter intervals from surface to bottom and will have two Large Orange Marine Buoy on the top and a 40lbs anchor and chain on the bottom. Data will be combined with bathymetric mapping and water quality monitoring to inform selection of critical habitats for monitoring. The loggers will be deployed at the end of June and retrieved in September, both trips will involve the AAROM Coordinator and local Dehcho Guardians. Dehcho AAROM is a part of the DehCho First Nations and is in constant communication with the First Nations. Formal meetings are scheduled at least once a year with each organization to present on current initiative including this project. As well an update and presentation will be given at the annual Dehcho K'ehodi gathering and Dehcho annual general assembly. Annual reports are also submitted to Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC) as required by the agreement. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from August 13, 2020 to September 30, 2020.
