Objective(s): To sample benthic invertebrates in Jackfish Bay and Kam Bay, to confirm benthic results from 2018 and determine if treated Con Mine effluent is affecting the benthic community in Jackfish Bay.
Project Description: This licence has been issued for the scientific research application No.4574. The objective is to sample benthic invertebrates in Jackfish Bay (exposure area) and Kam Bay (reference area), to confirm benthic results from 2018 and determine if treated Con Mine effluent is affecting the benthic community in Jackfish Bay. Benthic invertebrate samples will be collected at five stations in each of the following areas: Jackfish Bay near field exposure area, Jackfish Bay mid field exposure area, Jackfish Bay far-field exposure area, and Kam Bay (reference area). Samples will be collected using an Ekman grab sampler during a field survey expected to occur in late August/early September 2019 at the latest. Benthic invertebrate samples will undergo taxonomic identification and enumeration. The following endpoints will be calculated: total density, richness, and Simpson’s Evenness and Bray Curtis indices. The collection of benthic invertebrate samples is anticipated to have a negligible impact on the benthic invertebrate community, environment and fisheries resources in both Jackfish Bay and Kam Bay. In addition, water and sediment quality samples will be collected from Jackfish Bay near field, mid field, and far-field exposure areas, and the Kam Bay reference area. Water quality samples will be collected in each area during the field program, and additional samples will be collected for quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) purposes. In situ field parameters (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity) will be measured at the time of water quality sample collection. One composite sediment quality sample will be collected from each station (5 stations/area) with additional samples for QA/QC purposes. Technical reports will be available by request from Con Mine, and reports and/or community presentation if requested. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from August 10, 2019 to October 31, 2019.
