Objective(s): To gain a better understanding of the road infrastructure and nearby habitat, and of the beluga whale population in the near-shore Tarium Niryutait Marine Protected Area.
Project Description: The goal of this project are to safely collect high-resolution images utilizing remotely piloted aircraft, producing image products to allow for a better understanding of the road infrastructure and nearby habitat, and of the Beluga Whale population in the near-shore Tarium Niryutait Marine Protected Area. Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), based at Inuvik Airport will be used to fly above the identified locations and take high-resolution images. Possible collaboration with Igutchaq UAV, a subsidiary of the Inuvialuit Development Corporation. The collaboration would consist of orientation to large Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) operations. The results of this project will be disseminated through: the high-resolution images, orthomosaics, and digital elevation models, will be provided to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and the Government of the Northwest Territories. DFO and GNWT will provide to communities and stakeholders based on their internal policies related to research projects. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from July 17, 2019 to July 31, 2019.
