Objective(s): To increase the understanding of the geological history of the Sunset Lake area.

Project Description: This research is focused on increasing the understanding of the geological history of the Sunset Lake area through a detailed examination of ancient volcanic rocks exposed in this area. This work will be conducted mostly by hiking on foot. Zodiac boat with 25hp outboard motor or canoe will be used to reach the start of the hike each day. The hikes will be no more than 2 km from the lakeshore. During the day’s work, notes on the type of rock, minerals present, types of alteration and deformation will be collected. Hand-sized samples will be collected then sent away to laboratories or stored in Yellowknife. Food, fuel, and expediting services will all be sourced directly from Yellowknife. The research team will also be staying several nights in Yellowknife on the way to, and from the field. Geoscience data generated through this research will be publicly available through online databases and maps published by the Northwest Territories Geological Survey. The data will be presented at scientific conferences (e.g. Yellowknife Geoscience Forum, mid-November in Yellowknife). Copies of data or presentations are available upon request. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from June 7, 2019 to July 2, 2019.
