Objective(s): To acquire a reference geologic section of Devonian strata in the area of relatively easy access and with the preservation of rocks allowing for comprehensive study of Devonian-time Earth and hydrocarbon potential of the Canol shale play.

Project Description: To acquire a reference geologic section of Devonian strata in the area of relatively easy access and with the preservation of rocks allowing for comprehensive study of Devonian-time Earth and hydrocarbon potential of the Canol shale play. The research team will be conducting field measurement and photo-documentation of the available section, survey of the measured section with spectral gamma-ray scintillometer (SGR), the high-sensitivity tool allowing to correlate this section to recently drilled wells. The team will be taking oriented samples for paleomagnetic studies to be acquired with a handheld drill, every 1 m of stratigraphic thickness; and samples to determine geologic age of conodonts and palynomorphs. The team will take no more than 50 samples of 1.5-3.0 kg each, depending on rocks encountered Inorganic and organic geochemistry samples will be taken. Approximately 100-150 g every 0.5 m in the Canol shale play strata, and rarefied sampling in underlying and overlying strata. The team will be recruiting a wildlife monitor for the term of field work. A community outreach and/or geoscience seminar will be held in local schools (Yellowknife and /or Norman Wells). Results will be delivered in the form of NRCan and international peer-reviewed publications. Local communities and government bodies will be informed promptly. Community outreach discussing results of this research in the popular form may be scheduled. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from July 1, 2019 to August 31, 2019.
