Objective(s): To learn about the scope of work, strengths, and areas for improvement of the Community Health Worker (CHW) and Community Health Representative (CHR) programs in the Northwest Territories, Canada.
Project Description: This project aims to learn about the scope of work, strengths, and areas for improvement of the Community Health Worker (CHW) and Community Health Representative (CHR) programs in the Northwest Territories, Canada. All CHWs and CHRs employed in March-April, 2019 will be invited to participate in interviews, as well as all CHR and CHW managers. Where possible, interviews will be conducted in person at individuals’ home communities in a private location of their choosing (tentative plans to travel to Norman Wells, Inuvik, Fort Simpson, and Behchoko). Where that is not feasible, interviews will be conducted via phone or internet-based call/video call. All interviews will be transcribed, coded in a qualitative software program like Atlas.ti, then summarized and shared with participants, key stakeholders, and the broader community. This work will engage directly with Community Health Workers, Community Health Representatives, and their managers/supervisors in NWT to hear their thoughts about the CHW and CHR programs and the health and wellness of their communities. A summary of findings will be shared back with participants (through webinars and a written summary), as well as summarized and shared with individuals in the CHR and CHW programs to inform potential programmatic change. A summary of results will be communicated to participants through written summary (either mailed or emailed to participants), and a webinar. A written summary will be provided to key stakeholders (such as the regional authority, individuals involved in the CHR and CHW programs, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Research, and others identified through the course of the research). Summaries of the findings will also be submit and shared through the Fulbright Arctic Initiative process, and potentially through academic conferences and articles. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from March 12, 2019 to October 31, 2019.
