Objective(s): To research the history of Earth-surface environments between about 1 billion and 700 million years ago.

Project Description: This continuing research addresses the history of Earth-surface environments between about 1 billion and 700 million years ago. The objective is to complete the sample suite being used by a PhD student (most of the required samples are already in-hand). A base-camp of two people will be deployed by helicopter, and all work done on foot. Working on mountainside rock exposures, the research team will collect fist-sized samples for later geochemical analyses using a rock hammer. If the weather is good, the work will take only a few days (2-4). The research team will have no motorised equipment or fuel, beyond 2 litres of camp fuel for heating water. The team will have only freeze-dried food, which will be stored and disposed of responsibly (removal of refuse to Norman Wells municipal garbage) leave the campsite as it was found. Copies of publications in ensuing years, published in standard scientific journals, will be archived with Aurora Research Institute. The research team will make the findings accessible in everyday language as illustrated poster(s) that can be used in outreach activities. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from July 1, 2018 to August 31, 2018.
