Objectif(s): To investigate sections of exposed sediments along the Redstone River banks and some minor tributaries to establish the provenance and composition of these sediments.

Description du projet: The research team will investigate sections of exposed sediments along the Redstone River banks and some minor tributaries to establish the provenance and composition of these sediments. The team will evaluate the possible presence of ancient preglacial sediments buried beneath glacial sediments. It is also believed that ancient lake sediment may be present outside of the present flood plains of this area. These ancient lake sediments would provide a tool to reconstruct the past geography of the area. The research team will spend three days on the Redstone River and perform stratigraphic observations as well as sediment sampling. The geochemistry and mineralogy of these sediments will be determined later in laboratories. This research program consists of a condensed three-day field excursion for two trained scientists in remote locations with strict time, budgetary constraints and helicopter weight/passenger limits. All final results will be made public. The research team will create an open report published by the Northwest Territories Geological Survey and will present the results at the 2017 Yellowknife Geoscience Forum. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from July 12, 2017 to July 31, 2017.
