Objective(s): To determine how solid waste is disposed of in Yellowknife; what the regulations are for solid waste disposal in; and assess potential opportunities for Micro Auto Gasification System (MAGS) systems in Yellowknife.
Project Description: The objectives of this research project are to: 1) determine how solid waste is disposed of in Yellowknife; 2) determine what the regulations are for solid waste disposal in Northwest Territories (NT)/Yellowknife; and, 3) assess potential opportunities for Micro Auto Gasification System (MAGS) systems in Yellowknife. The research team will examine the regulations currently available in the NT and meet with Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) officials to learn if any changes to the regulations are planned or in process. The research team will prepare a tool to identify what are the important issues and information to understand before Terragon approaches customers so that they can be better prepared to meet the needs of their potential customers in the NT. In order to identify potential solid waste disposal opportunities in Yellowknife which are not currently well serviced, the research team will visit the dump and also determine how other industrial partners dispose of their solid waste and report this information for Terragon so they can understand what the current state of waste disposal is and if there are potential opportunities for them to use MAGS units in place of current practices. The team will also try to determine the cost per ton of solid waste disposal by examining budgets and other documents from the GNWT and Yellowknife. The research team will provide a report to Terragon which will be made public through the Aurora Research Institute. The research team will also provide at least one public lecture in Yellowknife about the research and findings. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from July 6, 2017 to December 31, 2017.
