Project Description: The project goals are to visit an area of known exposed bedrock in southeastern Northwest Territories to produce a detailed geological map documenting rock type, structure, and metamorphic style. This work requires geological mapping and rock sample collection. A field camp consisting of single person tents will be set up as a low impact staging area for mapping. Mapping will be conducted by foot traverses and small boat shoreline work. Geological mapping is simply observing bedrock exposures and documenting in a notebook the types of rocks, their structures and specific minerals present. The procedure is as low impact as hiking while taking notes. Some rock samples will be taken which is done by using a geological hammer. Samples are generally less than 1 kg and location of all samples are documented with a global positioning system. No heavy or motorized equipment will be used for rock sampling. The researchers are a small team performing short-duration field work. This work is low-impact, yet could aid in future resource assessment for local communities. The research team will consider the assistance of a local person to join the team in the field. In addition, the team annually present the nature and findings of the work at the Yellowknife Geoscience Forum, which is a public event that allows communication of the activities. This project also will include published papers with the Federal and NWT geological surveys which is publicly available. In addition, during meetings in Yellowknife the research team participate in outreach programs that help educate local school children in geoscience and mining. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from August 1, 2017 to August 15, 2017.
