Objective(s): To characterize the source rock potential of Devonian to Cretaceous age shales in the southern Peel Plateau.
Project Description: To characterize the source rock potential of Devonian to Cretaceous age shales in the southern Peel Plateau. At each site, the rock exposure will be described in detail and photographed. Natural radiation will be measured every meter using a sensor. A small amount of rock (equivalent to size of a fist) will be sampled every meter. Additional samples of 1-2 kg may be collected for dating the age of the rock. This research will add to the geological history of the area. Results will also help inform decision-makers about local resource potential. Reports will be published and available on the Northwest Territories Geological Survey website. Presentations will be given annually at the Yellowknife Geoscience Forum. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from June 29, 2016 to August 6, 2016.
