Objective(s): To visit the site where previously a fossil shark was found, in the hope of finding more of these well-preserved cartilaginous fishes.
Project Description: The research team will visit the site, as specialists in vertebrate palaeontology, in the hope of finding more of these well-preserved cartilaginous fishes. This will hopefully result in more fossil material, which will be collected and taken back to the institutions for study. The work would involve searching for more fossils: this mainly consists of hiking over the rocky exposures above the tree line and in the gullies. For the most part, fossils are easily found in the rock rubble on the slopes of the mountainside. However, in some rare instances, the research team might remove some material from the hill side (likely no more than about a few square feet at best). Research results will be educational and the research team would be happy to pass on information on the findings to local communities. We are also keen to seek the assistance of a local community member as a guide. The research team will provide any reports to local communities, planning ultimately to publish results in high quality journals. The team have also been in touch with Nahanni National Park: who expressed an interest in the findings. - The research team will keep them informed. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from August 8, 2016 to August 22, 2016.
