Objective(s): To document traditional knowledge of whitefish harvesting in Paulatuk, NT.
Project Description: The objective of the research is to document traditional knowledge and practices of whitefish harvesting in Paulatuk, Northwest Territories. The youth researcher will document traditional knowledge relating to whitefish using semi-structured interviews with elders and active harvesters. The cultural and social benefits of this project include the opportunity that might not always present itself for a youth to engage and spend time with elders in order to document traditional knowledge relating to whitefish. The youth researcher will be trained on the skills required for documentation of traditional knowledge. The youth researcher will also learn from elders, and will in turn be able to share that knowledge with other community members. The results will be communicated through a presentation by the youth research and the technicians to the Paulatuk Hunters and Trappers Committee (HTC) board members at a regular HTC meeting and to the community members during the HTC annual general meeting. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from May 13, 2016 to June 6, 2016.
