Objective(s): To do a series of case studies on processes, lessons and outcomes from development partnerships, specifically between the Tlicho Government and DeBeers.
Project Description: The objective of this project is to do a series of case studies on processes, lessons and outcomes from development partnerships starting with those local to the Sudbury mining camp, specifically with the Atikameksheng FN, Wanapitae FN and Sagamok FN. These will be based on multiple stakeholder interviews. Additional investigations will include the Lac Seul FN, the Ontario Métis Government (with Detour Lake Gold), Attawapiskat FN and Debeers and the Tlicho Government and DeBeers. Case studies are written based on informant interviews and use of secondary data. Informant interviews are usually generated by referral. The project is to develop a case study of relationship development between first people’s communities and resource development companies, particularly mining. The case would include historical context, government and company actions and lessons learned from the good and bad examples that exist. The case study will be one of seven developed to support a course in Corporate Social Responsibility. The benefit to the community will be publication and promotion of the story of relationship development with mining companies and the lessons learned. The case study will first be available in draft form comment by participants and other appropriate readers. Following finalization the case study and subsequent paper will be published for public use. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from May 2, 2016 to June 30, 2016.
