Objective(s): To examine the role of different sources of knowledge (science, Inuit knowledge) and how different actors evaluate risks and opportunities associated with non-renewable and renewable development.
Project Description: The Principal Investigator (PI) will examine how different people involved in energy development decision-making, including residents, environmental organizations, government, land claims organizations, and corporations, perceive the risks and possible benefits of different energy options. In particular, it will focus on the role of different sources of knowledge (science, Inuit knowledge) and how different actors evaluate risks and opportunities associated with non-renewable and renewable development. For the applied part of the project, the PI will work with interested collaborators in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, Nunavut, and Greenland to support the development of information-sharing networks to help address community questions and concerns about energy development. Methods used to collect data will include semi-structured interviews and collection and analysis of government and legal documents. If there are interviews with monolingual Inuvialuktun speakers, an interpreter will be used. For this phase of funded research, the PI will mainly be focusing on interviewing individuals employed in government and land claim organizations and non-governmental organizations. The PI will send a full summary of research results and copies of published articles to Aurora Research Institute. A short summary of research results will be sent to all individual interview participants, translated into the relevant languages (the PI will offer to send a hard copy or to send it by email). If there is interest by collaborators in Inuvik and/or Tuktoyaktuk in developing a longer-term project focused on building an information exchange network, the PI will plan to return to share results in person in a community meeting. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from October 14, 2015 to December 31, 2015.
