Objective(s): To assess the terrain along the proposed access road alignment of the Mackenzie Valley Winter Road and the potential material sources within the project area.
Project Description: The objective of the 2015 hydrotechnical assessment is to assess the known and potential watercourses along the proposed access road alignment. The 2015 geotechnical assessment will assess the terrain along the proposed access road alignment and the potential material sources within the project area. Observing the known and potential crossings along the alignment. During the field work the following tasks will be completed at potential crossings: 1) observations of flow and shorelines of watercourses; 2) survey of a typical cross-section for each watercourse; 3) manual measurements of channel flow if under flow; 4) measurements of water chemistry if under flow; 5) site photographs; and 6) observation and recording of any wildlife sightings. Observing the terrain conditions along the proposed alignment and in potential borrow sources. During the field work the following tasks will be completed: 1) visual observations of surface terrain, topography and vegetative cover by air and at selected locations on foot; 2) subsurface observations to depths of 1 to 2m at selected locations using a hand auger; 3) digging of test holes to depths of 0.5 to 1m at selected locations using a hand shovel; 4) collecting soil samples (maximum 20 liters in volume) from selected locations using a hand shovel; 5) site photographs; and, 6) observations and recordings of wildlife sightings. A report summarizing the 2015 findings will be prepared. The results will be reported to the Department of Transportation, Government of the Northwest Territories. The Department of Transportation will have copies of the report for sharing with the general public as they wish. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from July 27, 2015 to December 31, 2015.
