Objective(s): To search for glacial erratic boulders left behind by the retreating ice sheet margin and collect from them samples for cosmogenic exposure dating.
Project Description: The objective of this research project is to search for glacial erratic boulders left behind by the retreating ice sheet margin and collect samples for cosmogenic exposure dating. In order to obtain time constraints on the deglaciation ages in the Mackenzie River valley the research team will apply Be-10 cosmogenic exposure dating. The research team will aim to collect samples in a series of vertical transects on mountain slopes to determine the rate of vertical lowering of the ice sheet surface during deglaciation. This research will determine the timing of the retreat of glaciers from the area and the formation of the Mackenzie River. This will also allow us to understand the origin of sediments and permafrost characteristics along the Mackenzie River corridor. Copies of all research resulting from this project will be supplied to the Aurora Research Institute and to communities as Aurora thinks appropriate. A public presentation could be arranged if there is interest from the community of Fort Simpson. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from July 25, 2015 to July 31, 2015.
