Objective(s): To assess the major watercourses in the Gwich'in Settlement Area along the proposed Mackenzie Valley Highway alignment.
Project Description: The objective of the spring 2015 hydrotechnical assessment is to continue to assess the major watercourses (approximately 29) in the Gwich'in Settlement Area along the proposed Mackenzie Valley Highway alignment that were identified in the preliminary work completed in the Project Description Report submitted in May 2011. The spring 2015 field survey is planned to observe the proposed crossings along the alignment under high-flow, spring snowmelt/runoff conditions. During the field work the following tasks will be completed at potential crossings: •Fluvial geomorphologic assessment of watercourses; •Survey of a typical cross-section for each watercourse; •Manual measurements of channel flow; •Measurements of water chemistry; •Site photographs; and •Observation and recording of any wildlife sightings. The research team are working for and with the Gwich'in Development Corporation. The team anticipate obtaining the necessary field assistant(s) from this organization to help in the conduct of the field program. The Project Team is committed to continue to conform to any of the recommendations previously provided. A report summarizing sampling will be prepared. The results will be reported to Gwich’in Development Corporation and the Department of Transportation, GNWT. The Gwich'in Development Corporation will have copies of the report for sharing with the general public as they wish. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from May 15, 2015 to June 30, 2015.
