Objective(s): To develop a cultural safety intervention for clinicians through assessing the process of the pilot intervention and making recommendations to the intervention’s design, content, and deliver.

Project Description: This research involves a process evaluation of the pilot intervention. The research objectives are: (1) to assess the process of the pilot intervention, and (2) to make recommendations to the intervention’s design, content, and delivery based on pilot findings and analysis. The research questions are: 1. How do clinicians experience or respond to the design, content and delivery of the pilot intervention? 2. What aspects of the pilot intervention were perceived by participants to be most relevant and applicable? 3. How do participants perceive or experience the overall pilot intervention of agenda, timing, activities, and content? 4. What improvements could be made to the pilot intervention to ensure an efficient, respectful, and engaging process? Observation As the primary objective of this project is to examine the process of the pilot intervention, the Principal Investigator (PI) will observe and record all activities, interactions and participant responses over the two days. The pilot intervention will be audio recorded in order to augment the field notes. For instance, the PI will record body language and non-verbal communication. Participant Evaluation Questionnaires Short questionnaires: At the end of each session (there will be approximately 6 sessions over the two days) participants will be asked to complete a feedback questionnaire related to the design, content, and process of that session. Post-intervention questionnaire: After the final session on the second day, participants will be asked to complete a final feedback questionnaire related to the design, content, and process of the entire pilot intervention. Focus Group Clinicians selected for focus group participation will be engaged in a 2 hour discussion at the end of the pilot intervention. Participants will be asked to respond to questions using a circle format in which each participant has an opportunity to speak. These sessions will be audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim, removing all identifying information. The Government of the Northwest Territories' Department of Health and Social Services has a consultant to design and deliver this pilot intervention for clinicians working in the NT. The PI will communicate results by drafting a report for the Department of Health and Social Services on the findings from the evaluation. The PI will also engage the Elders' Advisory Group on how to best disseminate report to communities once the thesis and report are complete. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from February 20, 2015 to December 31, 2015.
