Objective(s): To measure the awareness and responses to older adult abuse, and to consider next steps for preventing older adult abuse throughout the Northwest Territories.
Project Description: The objectives of this research project are to: 1. compare previous research findings to measure changes in awareness and responses to older adult abuse; 2. gauge the impact of measures taken since the completion of 2010 research including the formation of networks, partnerships, training sessions, community events, and information campaigns; and, 3. consider next steps for preventing older adult abuse throughout the NWT. The objectives will be met through: 1. a file review of activities and outcomes since 2010 research; 2. a literature review of successful practices/models for preventing older adult abuse; 3. designing and testing of individual questionnaire and agency interview guide; 4. developing the survey sample to replicate the 2010 research; 5. recruiting and training community researchers in the 15 research communities; 6. trial of the individual questionnaire; 7. completing agency interviews; 8. compiling and analyzing data; and, 9. reporting findings. Community-based researchers will be trained to administer a survey of 10% of older adults. Local seniors/elders groups will be invited to provide advice and guidance. Results will be brought to a symposium in 2015. The symposium will be made up of a selection of research participants. The research results will be reported to the 64 members of the NWT Network to Prevent Older Adult Abuse and the NWT Seniors' Society. The results will also be posted on the websites of these agencies. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from February 18, 2015 to December 31, 2015.
