Objective(s): To determine the current environmental and physical conditions at each site by gathering sufficient information to develop appropriate remediation or risk management strategies, and associated cost estimates.
Project Description: The goal of this research project is to determine the current environmental and physical conditions at each site by gathering sufficient information to develop appropriate remediation or risk management strategies, and associated cost estimates. The project will involve the collection of various types of samples, such as soil, sediment, surface water, groundwater, waste rock, tailings, drum contents, vegetation, microorganisms, paint and/or building materials. Geotechnical and geophysical assessments will also be completed at the sites. Topographical surveying of the sites will be completed. Phase III Environmental Site Assessments, including Screening Level Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessments will be at three sites in the Northwest Territories. Site 1: Sun Rose Claim – a former uranium exploration site from the 1950s; Site 2: River Lake Portage – a former aggregate pit and current illegal dump site; and, Site 3: Highway #1 km 508 – a former aggregate pit that was used as a drum dump in the 1980s and 1990s. Soil sampling will be done using hand tools and a towed, portable mini-excavator. Groundwater sampling will be done using direct push wells and hand augers. Surface water, sediment, vegetation and benthic invert sampling will be done using hand samplers and methods. Barrel sampling will be done using hand tools. Local goods and services will be procured in the communities in which the work will be conducted. In addition, First Nations will be contacted to participate in the field programs as wildlife monitors and general laborers, as required. Through AANDC established reporting and communications methods. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from September 3, 2014 to December 31, 2014.
