Project Description: The objective of this research project is to determine what species inhabit the lake and collect measurements and samples from the fish to determine age, length, weight, contaminant levels, and general condition to gain more information on population structure. Information will be reported back to the Olokhaktomiut Hunters and Trappers Committee (OHTC). Two monitors will use fishing nets and/or multi-mesh gillnets to collect fish from Mayoklihok Lake. Measurements and samples will be collected in the field and catch-per-unit-effort data will be recorded. All, or nearly all (dependent on the OHTCs desire to send fish with visible irregularities to DFO for further testing) of the fish collected will be returned to the community of Ulukhaktok for distribution by the OHTC. The Olokhaktomiut HTC will hire two monitors from Ulukhaktok to perform the field component of the work. Results will be summarized and a report will be provided to the OHTC. If requested by the OHTC, this information can also be presented to community members from Ulukhaktok. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from November 13, 2013 to December 31, 2013.
