Objective(s): To conduct a reconnaissance study of the Smoking Hills area.
Project Description: The objective of this work is to conduct a one day reconnaissance study of the Smoking Hills area. Mineral, rock, water and soil samples will be collected. Geochemical properties and microbial communities will be analysed in the laboratory in order to characterize any potential features unique to this site that would warrant future, more detailed research. The site will be accessed by helicopter from Inuvik. We will travel above 2000 ft. to the site and avoid landing where any wildlife are present. Up to 8 hours will be spent walking around the site and collecting representative samples. Individual samples will be hand size or smaller. The total collection will be no more than 10 kg from the site. The site will otherwise be left undisturbed with no traces left behind. Upon return to the laboratory samples will be curated and prepared for analyses of minerals that make up the rocks as well as extraction and sequencing of DNA to identify microorganisms present in the site. The initial reconnaissance may lead to more extensive work in the future. A research report with all results will be provided to the Aurora Research Institute and any interested communities. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from August 6, 2013 to August 16, 2013.
