Objectif(s): To determine the current environmental and physical conditions at each site to allow for the potential future development of the appropriate remediation or risk management strategies and costs.

Description du projet: The purpose of each Phase I/II Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) is to determine the current environmental and physical conditions at each site to allow for the potential future development of the appropriate remediation or risk management strategies and costs. This will include the identification and quantification of environmental impacts to all media including soil, sediment, surface water and groundwater, as well as the identification and quantification of hazardous and non-hazardous materials at each site. Physical hazards will also be documented and characterized at each site. The purpose of the Phase III ESA and Risk Assessment is to further determine the current environmental and physical conditions at the site to reduce uncertainties and allow for informed decision-making regarding the need for remediation/risk management actions. The detailed assessment will include the identification and quantification of environmental impacts to all areas including soil, sediment, surface water and groundwater, as well as the identification and quantification of hazardous and non-hazardous materials at the site. At each site, environmental samples will be collected by hand (shovel or hand auger) or excavator for field screening [using a gas detector and metals-concentrations detector (XRF Analyzer)] and potential laboratory analysis for contaminant concentrations. Samples will be collected from surface water, groundwater, soil, and/or rock. Sample locations will be surveyed for GPS coordinates and topographical elevation. Approximately 150 environmental samples will be collected from all 5 sites included in this project. Final reports will be publicly available. The results of this study will be incorporated into the Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) consultation process with local community groups. A summary and copy of the final report will be sent to Aurora upon completion of the project. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from August 1, 2013 to August 14, 2013.
