Objective(s): To continue an ongoing long-term monitoring of permafrost temperatures on Banks Island and Mould Bay.

Project Description: The objective of this project is to continue an ongoing long-term monitoring of permafrost temperatures on Banks Island and Mould Bay. The research team is currently monitoring active layer and permafrost temperatures, active layer soil moisture, air temperature, and snow depth at this site using a datalogger and sensors from Campbell Scientific (Logan, UT). In August, 2010 the research team visited the sites and installed additional temperature sensors at 1.5, 2.0, and 3.0 meters below the surface. Previously the deepest measurements were 1 meter below the surface. Additionally during the August, 2010 visit the research team installed an Iridium transceiver that now enables them to collect the data remotely once per week. The data can be viewed online by visiting our webpage for this site (Banks Island, http://permafrost.gi.alaska.edu/site/bis; Mould Bay, http://permafrost.gi.alaska.edu/site/mob). The results (data) from these sites will be publicly available via the website. The page for Banks Island is, http://permafrost.gi.alaska.edu/site/bis and the page for Mould Bay is, http://permafrost.gi.alaska.edu/site/mob. Currently near real-time data from the sites can be viewed by clicking on the real-time data link at the top of the page. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from July 1, 2013 to August 31, 2013.
