Objective(s): To measure the wind energy potential at Storm Hills for two years, as part of an alternative energy study for the Inuvik area. Wind data will be collected using an existing infrastructure (New North Networks tower) at the site.

Project Description: The objective of this wind monitoring proposal is to measure the wind energy potential at Storm Hills for two years, as part of an alternative energy study for the Inuvik area. Wind data will be collected using an existing infrastructure (New North Networks tower) at the site. A desktop study was recently completed for Inuvik and the surrounding area at the request of the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) and the resulting wind analysis and computer modeling indicated Class 6 (out of 7) wind speeds for producing wind energy at the proposed study site. Two full years of wind measurements and an economic analysis will be necessary to confirm this prediction and the viability of wind energy for the Storm Hills site. Anemometers and a data logger will be attached to the existing 45m New North Networks tower. They will measure wind speeds for up to two years. The installation team will get to the site by helicopter. Certified tower climbers will install the equipment on the tower. No environmental impacts are anticipated, as these will be day trips. The anemometers will stay in place for the duration of the study, and occasional site visits will be made to check on the battery pack. Local northerners will be involved in the installation, upkeep, and take-down of this wind monitoring equipment. Local business is also being supported (helicopters, use of tower site). Inuvik residents will benefit from the data collected and the resulting wind energy feasibility study that will follow, once wind estimates have been verified for the site. The results from this study will be compiled into a wind analysis report which will be posted on the Aurora Research Institute website. Copies of the report will also be distributed to nearby community organizations and project partners, and a plain language report will be distributed for community members. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from September 15, 2012 to December 31, 2012.
