Objective(s): To take specific samples for the completion of a remedial action plan and risk assessment for the Five Mine Sites.
Project Description: The objective of this research is to take specific samples for the completion of a remedial action plan and risk assessment for the Five Mine Sites. The field component of the project will be conducted over a two day period. Limited soil and mine tailing samples from the most contaminated areas of the site will be taken. These areas were previously identified in past environmental site assessments. The samples will be collected using a shovel and auger for lab testing. The lab testing will focus on hydrocarbons and metals. The main contaminants of concern are arsenic, mercury, lead, nickel, copper, selenium, and limited areas of hydrocarbons. In the surrounding lakes the field team will use a small zodiac to collect limited water samples (Grab sampling or Kenmer sampling) and sediment samples (ponar or eckman sampling) to determine the water quality and toxicity of the sediment for remedial purposes. Water flow measurements will be conducted to determine the rate of influx into the surrounding water systems at specific mine seepage areas of interest. A fish habitat assessment will be conducted in limited specific locations to determine if the affected watersheds are used as fish habitat. Minnow traps and fish nets will be used to determine the presence of fish and the species in the lake. No fish samples will be taken for analysis. The ideal project outcome is to design a remedial action plan to return the sites to pre-development state. A Community consultation/presentation will be conducted through AANDC in conjunction with EBA. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from August 24, 2012 to December 31, 2012.
