Project Description: The objective of this research is to understand and identify factors that have influenced certain Northerner’s positive contributions to their communities. This research specifically aims to identify the various social and learning environments of northerner’s that have led to their successes within the community. Data will be collected through a qualitative approach, using one-on-one or telephone in-depth interviews. Six participants will be interviewed, with each research member interviewing two individuals. The participants will be residents of the Northwest Territories, who have been primarily raised and/or educated in the Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Nunavik, and Nunatsiavut. The research teams are Northwest Territories residents themselves, most of the participants will be known to the research team on a personal level. The participants will be either Aboriginal or non-Aboriginal and will be recruited purposively. The interviews will take approximately one hour to complete, and will be recorded with a digital recording device. This study aims to understand the various learning environments that have contributed to the successes of a select few northerners and the positive contributions they have made to their communities as a result. The research team anticipates that many of the participants will have no more than a high school diploma, and the team would like to understand what other positive influences they have had in their lifetime. This study will be beneficial in that it validates all forms of knowing, including formal education but also land based skills, teachings from Elders and so forth. The emphasis on western education is great in Canada but we would like to showcase other forms of education that provide success as well. The results will be available in the form of a written report which will be distributed to the participants by mail. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from June 12, 2012 to December 31, 2012.
