Objective(s): To conduct a Traditional Knowledge study that will serve as a starting point for the commencement of Devonian Metals’ environmental and socio-economic research, and will greatly improve the quality of data produced by the studies leading up to and during the permitting process.
Project Description: Blyth & Bathe Inc purposes to conduct a Traditional Knowledge study that will serve as a starting point for the commencement of Devonian Metals’ environmental and socio-economic research, and will greatly improve the quality of data produced by the studies leading up to and during the permitting process. Blyth & Bathe Inc, in conjunction with the Pehdzeh Ki First Nation (PKFN liaison), will develop an interview protocol. It is expected that the interviews will be discussion based rather than question and answer format. Normally a project this size will have five to ten informants during the first round of interviews that provide the bulk of the data. Site visits will also be necessary, as Traditional Knowledge (TK) is a ‘lived’ experience that can best be accessed while in situ. Much higher quality additional information can be obtained from visiting the project site with the informants. After the interviews, relevant data will be transferred into a Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Once a draft of the report is produced there will be a higher-level community review of the report. This process may involve Blyth & Bathe Inc present multiple drafts over the course of a number of community meetings. If it is deemed necessary, a process of ground truthing sites in the field will be conducted for sites ascribed a high value and likely directly impacted by the proposed mine. The research team will be working with PKFN to help develop a liaison position with the band. This local liaison will work closely with Blyth & Bathe Inc, to ensure that the project meets the needs and desires of PKFN. The liaison will also be employed in the planning, research and translation phases. A plain language report will be delivered to PKFN and the project informants. All original data will be transferred to the PKFN TK library to be used as the community desires. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from June 1, 2012 to September 30, 2012.
