Project Description: The goal is to distinguish the chemical and physical processes acting on different coastal lakes in order to understand how the systems have developed through time. Water from lakes at both field sites will be sampled for laboratory analysis. This is the fourth year of sampling at Shellabear Lake, and we are testing to see if the lake at Chevalier Bay is also hypersaline. We will take a short sediment core from the latter site to evaluate the potential to reconstruct past climate from the sediments. Travel Arrangements In June, 2-3 researchers will be flown via helicopter from a nearby camp at Cape Bounty, Melville Island, Nunavut to sample at the lakes. This will require a site visit of about 3-4 hours at each lake. No plans have been made to camp at the location in 2010, but if sampling at Chevalier Bay indicates promise, more sampling or a camp for up to one month may be established in 2011. The researcher will distribute results in lay reports, the scientific literature and on the web with a informational site and also continue to respond to queries and answer questions from government and community agencies. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted around June 16-17, 2010.
