Project Team: Dr. James (Jed) E. Day (co-PI, Illinois State University), Dr. Lindsey R. Leighton (field assistant, co-PI, University of Alberta)

Objective(s): To examine, measure, and describe the rock properties and strata of several, but not all, of the mentioned rock outcrops and to sample invertebrate fossils for (1) correlating the strata between outcrops and (2) identify potential sites for future student research projects.

Project Description: This year, the research purpose is to investigate potential geological localities for work next year, so direct involvement with local communities and guides will be minimal. The researcher intends to identify and talk with people who have outfitting and guide businesses, and those who have knowledge of potential research areas for next summer’s research. The objectives of the proposed research are: 1. To examine, measure, and describe the rock properties and strata of several, but not all, of the mentioned rock outcrops 2. If necessary, to collect small (fist-sized or less) samples for later microscopic examination in the lab 3. Sample invertebrate fossils for (1) correlating the strata between outcrops and (2) identify potential sites for future student research projects 4. Identify localities or areas where research could be undertaken in the summer of 2010 5. Meet potential local outfitters and guides for areas not available by car and learn from local people about the rocks and environment. The researcher is very willing to present results to the individuals and communities of the NWT. They welcome opportunities to present lectures or demonstrations to schools, perhaps involving future research students as well. After lab analysis and formal description, final results will be disseminated and housed at appropriate locations in the NWT for public use, as well as made available online at the Alberta Geological Survey in the final open-file report. Lastly, results will eventually be disseminated in peer-reviewed scientific journals and talks, which NWT geologists may read or attend. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from September 17, 2009 to October 31, 2009.
