Objective(s): The objectives of the monitoring program are to ensure that the on-site remediation works remain effective; to ensure that site specific health risks are monitored; and to identify any long-term changes that might be indicative of failures of the remediation works.

Project Description: The objectives of the monitoring program are to ensure that the on-site remediation works remain effective; to ensure that site specific health risks are monitored; and to identify any long-term changes that might be indicative of failures of the remediation works. The above objectives will be met by conducting a geotechnical inspection of the decommissioned mine, tailings and waste dump areas; conducting a gamma radiation dosimetry survey of both the North and South tailings caps; conducting a radon gas survey of tailings areas, old mill site, adit and vent raises; collecting surface water samples; and collecting ground water samples from groundwater wells and inspecting groundwater well integrity. Gamma radiation surveys will be conducted using a Ludlum Model 19 Radiation Meter. The amount of radon and radon progeny will be measured using long-term electrostatic monitoring devices (E-Perms). Surface water samples will be collected, as shoreline grab samples and groundwater samples will be collected from existing groundwater wells. In the past (2005) the field assessment team was fortunate to have been joined in the field by Behchoko community members Georgina Chocolate, Phillip Huskey and Noel Drybones whose historical experience with the site was invaluable. A plain language summary of the research will be submitted to Aurora Research Institute. The final report will also be submitted and will be accessible to the community. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from September 1, 2009 to October 31, 2009.
