Objective(s): The objective of this research is to identify and document valued vegetation components in the vicinity of proposed winter activities.

Project Description: The objective of this research is to identify and document valued vegetation components in the vicinity of proposed winter activities. Each selected site will be assessed for important vegetation components, such as the potential for: rare plants and vegetation communities. The research will include photo documentation and visual observations to characterize each site for vegetation features. Information collected during the study will be used in planning and determining appropriate locations for 2008/2009 drilling and seismic activity components. This research will be completed to investigate potential winter drill and seismic project sites. Selected sites identified during the earlier reconnaissance include: potential barge landing and staging sites; potential component activity sites within exploration areas; potential overland access routes for the projects Helicopter-supported field surveys will be conducted following a flight plan designed to visit selected sites identified by MGM, while minimizing flightlines. On ground times for this component will be approximately 4 hours for each selected site. Traditional knowledge will be incorporated into the research to the extent possible. The Inuvialuit Cultural Resource Center will be consulted to obtain information on heritage sites and traditional land use. A wildlife monitor familiar with the assessment areas will accompany all field crews to provide traditional land use information. Fieldwork will be conducted from July 23, 2008 to August 31, 2008 at potential barge landing and/or staging/marshalling sites including: North Ellice, Reindeer Channel, Middle Channel, Harry Channel North, Mallik Bay, Mason Bay, Mouth of the East Channel, Corral Bay, Lucas Point, Swimming Point, Reindeer Station, Camp Farewell and Taglu Tower Site. As well, research will be performed at potential well sites within each of the ten drilling target areas (three proposed at Umiak and seven proposed at West Delta). And finally, aerial reconnaissance will take place over potential overland access routes for the winter drilling and seismic projects (Umiak and West Delta). Exact locations can be obtained from the researcher.
