Project Description: The overall objective of the program is to reduce liability of the Canol Trail by developing and implementing a remediation and/or risk management plan to mitigate existing or potential risks to human health and the environment from the trail. The primary focus will be on developing a logistics plan and inventorying materials, risks and hazards along the site for future assessments. The research will involve the collection of hazardous materials samples, conducting a photo and video documentary of all sites and areas of potential concern as well as a full inventory and documentation of the areas. The inventory and documentation will include an aerial reconnaissance from Norman Wells to and over the Canol Trail, recording all coordinates of various waypoints and tracing the route of the telephone line, pipeline and roadway along the Trail. In particular, the telephone line is of great importance because it poses a physical hazard for local wildlife. The primary source of transportation will be via ATV. The information gathered from this analysis will allow the assessment team to determine potential risks to human health and the environment, for the development of a risk management plan. Hardcopies of the draft and final reports will be retained in CARD’s Yellowknife office. Electronic copies of the reports and all data gathered will be stored electronically. To access Sahtu Settlement Lands (private lands) on the CANOL Trail region, the researchers have to follow the Tulita District Land Corporation requests, contacting this organization beforehand. Fieldwork will be conducted from August 03 to August 18, 2008 along 372 km of the Canol Trail (various sites from Mile 0 to Mile 222).
