Objective(s): The goals of this research camp are to provide the communities most affected by DDMIÆs mining operation the ability to collect and apply traditional knowledge to assess water quality before, during and after mining operations.
Project Description: The goals of this research camp are to provide the communities most affected by DDMI’s mining operation the ability to collect and apply traditional knowledge to assess water quality before, during and after mining operations. The specific goals include: 1) to review information on Diavik’s Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program, quality control, site sampling, and chain of custody issues; 2) Learn/review how to use sampling equipment: Hydrolab, Betabottle, Ekman Grab sampler, and a gravity-feed core sampler; 3) Review the importance of water, benthic invertebrates, and sediment samples. A float plane and boats will be used to transport equipment and individuals to and from the research site. Water quality sampling will use a standard Van Dorn type at top, middle and bottom of the water column at three sites; community participants will take samples under supervision of environmental consultants using an on-the-job-training approach. This program will be carried out by trained scientists, community participants and aboriginal youth. DDMI will provide support staff, which will include locally hired/aboriginal community members from across the North. Fieldwork will be conducted from August 05 to August 08 at Lac de Gras (110° 30' W, 64°30'N).
