Objective(s): This research will collect environmental samples, and quantify and categorize waste materials left at the Sawmill Bay site in preparation for site remediation.
Project Description: This license has been issued for the scientific research application #856. This research will collect environmental samples, and quantify and categorize waste materials left at the Sawmill Bay site in preparation for site remediation. Research will involve sediment, surface water, soil, and groundwater sampling. A detailed explanation of the research methodology can be found in the research application or by contacting the researcher. Other analysis will include a building structure survey (examining lead, PCB and asbestos materials) and a waste material inventory. An overall site map will be created to compile this information. The results of this study will be incorporated into INAC's consultation process with local community groups in preparation for site remediation. The research team will stay at a local fishing lodge and visit the site daily for 10 days by float plane. An ATV will be used on site, and a helicopter will be used (1 day) for reconnaissance of old roadways and disturbed areas. A small boat will be used for water and sediment sampling. As well, two wildlife monitors will be hired. This fieldwork will be conducted from July 03 to July 10, 2008 at Sawmill Bay.
