Project Description: The research is focused on accelerating the remediation of Federal Contaminated Sites Action Program (FCSAP) on Victoria Island. The research focuses on determining the remaining risks at the sites and developing a plan to address those risks. There will be an environmental site assessment which involves the collection of soil, sediment, water, and materials (a detailed explanation of the sampling can be found in the research application). The information gathered from these samples will allow the assessment team to determine waste volumes for each component and to recommend the most technically feasible options for consideration during future RAP development for these Sites. Following the completion of the environmental site assessment activities during Summer 2008, CARD is planning on presenting a community information session in Ulukhaktok in conjunction with the planned Johnson Point Site Remediation community information session scheduled for November 2008. Once the reports have been finalized, copies of the completed report will be made available to both the Inuvialuit Land Administration (for their distribution to interested community parties) and the Aurora Research Institute. In addition, a presentation summarizing the assessment results and outlining the potential remedial options for each waste stream will be given during the community information session following the Johnson Point Site Remediation Community Update Meeting. Opportunities for local involvement include participation in community consultation meetings for the development of Remedial Action Plans (RAP) for the Sites and the provision of wildlife monitoring services during the field program for the site assessments. Past consultation for RAP development for similar projects has generally drawn upon the tradition knowledge for elders and community members from the Elders Committee, Community Corporation, and Hunters and Trappers Committee. Fieldwork will be conducted from July 03 to December 31, 2008 at the Muskox Mines Syndicate Camp, Muskox Mines Syndicate Landing Strip, L17 (113.04349, 71.92217), Grandroy Camp, Exploration Camp, Western Mining Company Camp.
