Objective(s): This research will examine 400 million years old rock with the hope to find fossilized skeletons of long-extinct fishes, and sample them for study to learn more about the early history and evolution of fish.
Project Description: This research will examine 400 million years old rock with the hope to find fossilized skeletons of long-extinct fishes, and sample them for study to learn more about the early history and evolution of fish. Using rock hammers and chisels, sections of rock will be split to discover fossilized bones of fish. Samples will be taken for study and further preparation in the laboratory at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa. Samples are normally from about one-half kilogram to four or five kilograms in weight. Copies of any talks or papers on this research will be sent to interested community organizations, as well as a power point presentation with photos, field activities and discoveries. The fieldwork will be conducted from July 17 to August 09, 2008 at N68 10.634, W125 48.573 on the Anderson River as well as 1 to 2 km upstream of this point. The base camp will be at the Anderson River, N68 10.000 W125 46.916.
