Objective(s): The objective of the 2008 fieldwork is to monitor vegetation, invertebrates, and fish populations associated with lakeshore and stream habitat restoration and enhancement.
Project Description: This licence was issued for the application no. 802. The objective of the 2008 fieldwork is to monitor vegetation, invertebrates, and fish populations associated with lakeshore and stream habitat restoration and enhancement. Data will be used to evaluate the continuing success and effectiveness of restored or enhanced stream and lakeshore habitats against control sites, through time. Field crews will fly to the Matthews Lake airstrip or lake dock. Treeline Lodge – the research team base – has vehicles that will be used to transport equipment and personnel to monitoring stations. Fish will be collected using seine nets, angling, minnow traps, and/or electrofishing. Observations of fish will also be gathered through streambank walks and spawning surveys. All fish collected will be weighed, measured and checked for health before being returned to their natural waters unharmed. Public consultation will take place with interested parties. A report will be written and submitted to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. A copy of the report will be forwarded to the Aurora Research Institute. DFO and PWGSC are presently planning to undertake a community workshop in Yellowknife at the completion of the Project's 2008 field season, to engage community members in a discussion and review of project results. The 2008 monitoring program will involve two field site visits between June and October, 2008 and Dillon project staff will include two biologists. Opportunity exists for local involvement through employment for one or two local field technicians and through field-based training in ecological monitoring and fisheries assessments. Fieldwork will be conducted from June 17 to October 01, 2008, at Matthews Lake, Sandy Lake, an unnamed pond (referred to as Pond B), an unnamed stream (referred to as Stream B), and habitat surrounding these features.
