Objective(s): To concentrate on the characterization of 3 observed gas seeps; to identify additional seeps in the region; and, to characterize permafrost conditions as thinning permafrost and the development of taliks is a hypothesized mechanism for the development of gas discharge pathways.
Project Description: This licence was issued for the scientific research licence application number 757. This research will concentrate on characterization of 3 observed gas seeps, identification of additional seeps in the region, and characterization of permafrost conditions, as thinning permafrost and the development of taliks is a hypothesized mechanism for the development of gas discharge pathways. Water and gas samples will be collected by hand. Gas discharge will be measured using hand-held devices to evaluate changes in flow rates. During spring thaw and autumn freeze-up an aerial survey will be conducted to identify additional seeps in the study area. The permafrost base will be determined by non-invasive geotechnical methods. Local geology will be assessed to identify the origins of active gas flows. Water geochemistry will be characterized through sampling. Thermal anomalies will be identified through temperature measurements and/or infra-red techniques. Transportation will be by helicopter from Inuvik, by snowmachine, and/or by boat from a small camp. Communication is done through the licensing application process and published results. Posters are displayed at Inuvik Research Centre. Papers will be offered to local libraries and community associations. Local guides, students and contractors are hired. Vehicles, accommodation, supplies and services are purchased locally. Local knowledge of conditions impacting the study are sought. Fieldwork will be conducted from March 23 to April 04, June 01 to 08, August 06 to 15, and October 12 to 18, 2008, at Big Lake, 69°24'30"N, 134°56'30"W, Kimialuk Lake, 69°23'22"N, 135°09'19"W, Middle Channel, 69°19'30"N, 135°29'15"W, Unnamed lake 1, 69°14'30"N, 135°20'22"W, Unnamed lake 2, 69°13'15"N, 135°14'31"W (100-150km north of Inuvik and 80-100km west of Tuktoyaktuk). The work will be conducted mainly from Inuvik but there may be a summer camp on Richards Island, 69°19'15"N, 135°29'12"W.
