Objective(s): The program aims to a) collect baseline data on dietary intake and other factors affecting food intake, b) carry out an intervention program that will be developed with community input to improve diet, food availability and food knowledge and preparation skills, c) collect data on dietary intake after the 12 month program to see if the diets improved.
Project Description: The overall goal of the program is to improve healthy food consumption through improved availability and nutrition education to prevent risk factors for chronic disease. This program will work closely with the communities to identify which foods to target. The program aims to a) collect baseline data on dietary intake and other factors affecting food intake, b) carry out an intervention program that will be developed with community input to improve diet, food availability and food knowledge and preparation skills, c) collect data on dietary intake after the 12 month program to see if the diets improved. The researcher plans to interview 70 men and women randomly selected from housing lists and maps, who are the main food shoppers in each community and who are over age 18. The consent form will be read to subjects before any questions from the Adult Impact Questionnaire or Food Frequency Questionnaire are asked and before any signatures are obtained. All information gained, the production of reports to be distributed through local Hamlets and Inuit organizations and the training of local people to complete data collection in local languages whenever possible, is conducted jointly by all the partners. Results will be communicated to the residents of the communities through local Hamlets and Inuvialuit organization(s). Formal reports will be prepared and submitted to the community and any other partners as appropriate. Fieldwork will be conducted from May 9 to December 31, 2007 in Inuvik and Ulukhaktok.
