Objective(s): This national study addresses the enablers and barriers to the practice of nursing in Community Health settings. Factors that hinder as well as facilitate Community Health Nurses (CHNs) to practise the competencies associated with their specialty will be investigated. The information obtained in this project will assist policy planners in improving efficiency in the deployment of nurses and in better supporting CHNs to exercise their full scope of skills and knowledge.
Project Description: This national study addresses the enablers and barriers to the practice of nursing in Community Health settings. Factors that hinder as well as facilitate Community Health Nurses to practise the competencies associated with their specialty will be investigated. The information obtained in this project will assist policy planners in improving efficiency in the deployment of nurses and in better supporting Community Health Nurses to exercise their full scope of skills and knowledge. An external mail-out survey to professional nurses working in the NWT will be carried out with the assistance of the Registered Nurses Association of NWT and Nunavut. Respondents may answer on the hard copy version of the questionnaire and mail it in a self-addressed envelope or alternatively, fax the completed questionnaire or respond online. All responses come directly to the McMaster Nursing Research Unit and are only handled and used by the researchers. The questionnaire was tested by experts for content validity, revised and tested for reliability. The questionnaire investigates selected CHN professional attributes, team functioning, employer approaches, and community context. Approximately 5000 CHNs across Canada will be surveyed. The research team is presently working with the Executive Director of the Registered Nurses Association of NWT and Nunavut to determine numbers for the sample in all regions of the NWT. Identifying numbers will be used to track respondents for the purpose of ensuring good response rates. Responses will not be linked to any personal information and this will only be available to the researchers who collate the data. Questionnaire data will be stored in a locked facility at McMaster University. Only members of the research team will have access to the data. Electronic copies of questionnaires will be made password-secure. At the end of the study, all the gathered information will be destroyed. The findings of the study will appear in public health and professional nursing journals, conferences, newsletters and on the project website. Relevant information will be shared with health policy and decision makers. A copy of all project reports will be deposited at the Aurora Research Institute library. Questionnaire distribution will occur from February 20 to May 16, 2007 at nursing stations and medical centres in the NWT where CHNs are employed.
